Newsplan West Midlands
Information on the project funded in 2004 through the Full Disclosure programme, including the final report from the NEWSPLAN West Midlands Implementation Committee (see PDF files).
This project is designed to broaden accessibility through the transfer of disparately held bibliographic and location data to an online facility. Replacing current index and finding aids that are at present only available in hard copy, this will be supported by the additional ICT provision that has been made available to all libraries as part of the Government's People's Network initiative.
Full Disclosure funding for the retrospective conversion of data will enable details of almost 1100 newspaper titles in the West Midlands region, published over the last 400 years, to be searchable online. For the first time, researchers across the world will be able to identify with ease newspapers in the West Midlands region that were published in a particular location at a particular time and discover where copies of the titles may be consulted. The newspapers span over four centuries of Midlands history and give a unique insight into everyday life and into local and national events, as seen through the eyes of those who were present at the time. The specially developed database software enables complex and powerful searches to be carried out so that researchers can quickly identify titles of interest and trace mergers and name changes at the click of a button.
