Working UK-wide

The British Library works with the library and information network across the UK, raising awareness of the breadth, depth and local and regional relevance of its collections and services. We published our Regional Strategy in 2006.

Events 'on Location'

We organise  a programme of events around the UK, including activities to accompany some of the Library’s major exhibitions in London as well as stand-alone panel exhibitions focusing on iconic treasures, such as the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Luttrell Psalter, or on specific themes from our collection.

Exhibitions for hire

Our travelling panel exhibitions, together with Turning the Pages versions of some of our Treasures, can be borrowed at no charge, subject to availability. For further information please contact

Exhibition loans

Each year the British Library lends a large number of items from our collections to exhibitions throughout Britain and around the world.

Lectures 'on location'

Our curators and other experts share their knowledge of the Library's collections through public lectures. These may accompany a travelling exhibition, events or exhibitions in London, or focus on our treasures, significant new acquisitions or loans to other institutions.

Bursary schemes

We have joined forces with Libraries and Information East Midlands, the East Midlands Branch of CILIP and the London Libraries Development Agency to offer librarians working in the East Midlands, London or the South East regions the opportunity to visit and study at the British Library in London. Bursaries of between £500 and £1,000 are available.

We support the Inspire initiative which aims to support learning in its widest sense and to provide a seamless pathway to the information and inspiration library users are seeking, wherever it may be found.

NEWSPLAN is the co-operative programme for the microfilming and preservation of local and regional newspapers and for making them accessible to users. It involves public, academic and national libraries, archives, and the newspaper industry.

Full Disclosure

Full Disclosure was a British Library-led initiative extending to all museums, libraries and archives in the UK. It aimed to achieve easy online discovery of all major sources of all freely accessible UK information by potential users. It supported and encouraged the conversion of information on index cards to online databases and the retrospective cataloguing of all uncatalogued collections so that their immense value could be realised.
