PhD Placements at the British Library

Placements at the British Library provide opportunities for PhD students from all disciplines to develop and apply transferrable research skills outside of the university sector. They support the professional development of researchers for future career paths both within and outside academia.  Placement projects are hosted both by specialist curatorial teams and by staff working in areas such as research engagement, digital scholarship, corporate affairs and public policy.

Current opportunities

A broad range of placement opportunities have been identified by the Library for 2016-17 (See the PDF links below to view placement project profiles)

Funding and support

A dedicated work and development plan for each placement project ensures appropriate induction, training, supervision and support. All placement students have their own desk and/or workspace, and are fully integrated into the team/department in which they are based.

The Library’s placement scheme has been developed in consultation with HEI partners and stakeholders. Students applying for a placement at the Library are expected to consult their HEI or Doctoral Training Partnership/Doctoral Training Centre to ascertain what funding is available to support them.
