Cellulose Acetate Microfilm Forum (CAMF)
In 2002, the British Library and the Library of Congress took the lead on addressing the difficulties associated with managing cellulose acetate microfilm collections.
Introduction: International Round-Tables
From 2002 to 2006, together with other leading institutions, five international round-tables on preservation microfilm were convened, to share knowledge and experience and to try to agree a united approach to a common problem.
Round-Table 1 (10 December 2002, British Library, London)
Round-Table 2 (5 March 2004, Library of Congress, Washington)
Round-Table 3 (23 May 2005, British Library, London)
Round-Table 4 (5 May 2006, Princeton, New Jersey)
The first international round-table brought together representatives of major research libraries and leading microfilm producers to discuss the issues of cellulose acetate microfilm. Conducted under the St Pancras principles of anonymity, attendees were able to discuss openly the positions of their own institutions with a view to sharing and agreeing a way forward
At the second and subsequent roundtables, members updated each other on progress they had made in managing their acetate collections and/or on the plans they were putting in place in response to the problems identified.
Round-Table Outcomes
The Round-Tables encouraged discussion and debate between the participating institutions on managing cellulose acetate collections. These discussions are recorded in a Report of Findings and cover a wide range of issues. (Please see the Report on Findings pdf file in the right-hand column.)
CAMF: Exploring the Issues, Examining the Options (23 -24 May 2005)
The British Library, at the second International Round-Table, agreed to host a cellulose acetate microfilm forum (CAMF) to widen the debate and encourage international engagement and collaboration. The forum was organised under the LIBER Preservation Division banner and includes presentations from international speakers and practical break-out sessions on how to conduct a survey. (Please see the Guidelines and Experiences pdf file in the right-hand column.)
