Bibliographic Products and Services

The British Library provides a number of products and services through which its records are distributed to the library and information community for use under licence. In this way, the Library's records are incorporated by information providers in their services and are made available to end-users throughout the world.

British Library data licensing services include the British National Bibliography, British Library catalogue files and the distribution of the Library of Congress 'Books All' file in the UK and Europe. In addition, the Library produces a range of printed bibliographic publications.

British Library bibliographic products and services reflect developments in bibliographic standards and cataloguing policy. In June 2004 the Library adopted MARC 21 as its cataloguing format as a result of which there will be no further development of the UKMARC national format. Exchange file services such as the British National Bibliography (BNBMARC) file will be available in MARC 21 and also in UKMARC while there is still demand for the latter format.

The latest versions of the UKMARC Manual (complete up to the 8th and final update of November 2002) and the UKMARC Exchange Record Format are still available online.

Further information about service developments will be made available on this page.
