Dyslexic entrepreneurs research

26/07/12

Do you think that you may be amongst a long list of entrepreneurs with dyslexia?

“I wanted to be an editor or a journalist, I wasn't really interested in being an entrepreneur, but I soon found I had to become an entrepreneur in order to keep my magazine going.”

Richard Branson

“Being dyslexic can be frustrating, but I have worked with quite a few people who suffer from it as well and found it quite refreshing- we all understood each other's emails in no time. In no way has it held up any of us in life or in business.”

Kelly Hoppen

"I discovered I could do things better than other people. If I had an idea, I could visualise it in my brain and spin it around.”

Tom Pellereau

MA research student, Sally Ann Clarke, is currently on a placement at the Business & IP Centre to investigate entrepreneurship and dyslexia.

The Business & IP Centre is hosting a research placement for  an MA student from the University of Brighton. She is looking to find entrepreneurs and business people who are dyslexic.

Sally Ann understands the difficulties of dyslexia after discovering that she was dyslexic eight years ago. She has learnt some strategies to try and overcome them, but is aware of some of the ‘advantages’ such as good verbal communication, lateral thinking and creativity. These ‘advantages’ are perhaps why someone with dyslexia becomes an entrepreneur in the first place.

Her choice of research topic came from bringing various ideas together in particular Cass Business School’s research by Dr Logan that entrepreneurs have a significantly higher incidence of dyslexia than in corporate management and the general population.

Sally needs your help! If you are dyslexic and have used the Business & IP Centre, if you think you may be dyslexic or if you know a dyslexic entrepreneur please do get in touch. She would love to hear from you. Email: SallyAnne.Clarke@bl.uk
