Help wanted: What to do next?

21/05/13

One of the biggest challenges of running your own business is being ready and able to bring people on board to your business as either an employee or a contractor.

Mirtha Medina who runs regular workshops at the Centre, has shared some of her tips what to consider when in getting casual help, using a freelancer or employing a member of staff. Here are Mirtha’s tips:

Key questions
1. Are you constantly busy?
2. Do you get busy during a particular season?
3. Do you need help on a particular project?

The answer to the first question above will help you decide if you need a seasonal person or a freelancer as and when demand increases.

Freelancer
If you opt for a freelancer, ensure that you put in place a formal agreement signed by both parties. This establishes a clear business relationship from the start and it ensures your business is protected.

Employee
Before starting your recruitment process, clearly define the tasks, know what you are prepared to delegate and what qualifications and experience they must have to meet your business needs.  Make sure your job description and and job specification are both clear.

Next steps

1. Prepare questions for the interview in advance to ensure that you are consistent in your selection process.

2. Avoid questions that could lead to claims of discrimination such as age, disability or gender related.

You can find out more about how to hire and manage people effectively by joining Mirtha’s workshop Bring people on board to your business at the Centre.
