Women Like Us - our success story

Anthony Lau

Karen Mattison and Emma Stewart founded Women Like Us in 2004, to meet the dual needs of women looking for flexible work after raising a family and employers looking for talented part-time employees.

Since developing the idea at Karen's kitchen table, Women Like Us has grown to employ 60 staff and now has a turnover £1.6 million. The company has been the recipient of numerous exciting awards, including Best New Social Enterprise (2007) and Queen's Award for Enterprise (2009), and Emma and Karen were made MBEs in 2010. They have also won the Mumpreneur category in the Cisco and Management Today Award 2011's Business Heroes.  These awards celebrate shining examples of the UK’s most enterprising small businesses.

In setting up their business, Karen and Emma have used the Business & IP Centre extensively, initially to get invaluable advice from our (then) expert, the late Anita Roddick and more recently to research the recruitment market in London and network with other small businesses who may need their recruitment expertise.
