Caring for collections e-induction
Designed for all library and archive staff, this free multimedia resource guides you through a range of preservation topics, such as handling, storage, environment and security.
Work through the topics at your own pace and select tasks and activities to test your knowledge. The accompanying workbook contains a summary of the tasks, key points and links to additional information from each section.
Collection care icons
Designed for use in the British Library reading rooms, these icons have been used extensively in leaflets and posters. We are now sharing these icons under a creative commons license, so that heritage organisations can incorporate them into their own collection care posters, guidance and leaflets, free of charge. Simply select the icons required from our icons page and email us to obtain the files.
Ecology of preservation: a map of affinities

The preservation policy is at the heart of an organisation’s strategy for collection care. It must align with an organisation's mission and other key strategies such as collection management, with mutual cross-referencing as required. This map of affinities has been developed to summarise the elements of preservation within the wider context of collection management. Click on the headings to find links to other sources of information.
Compiling a preservation policy
This template has been designed to support staff preparing a Preservation Policy for their own organisation. Preservation Policies vary between different organisations depending on specific needs. Staff preparing policies may also wish to also refer to the Preservation Advisory Centre booklet Building a preservation policy and examples from other organisations when considering what to include.
Disaster/Emergency planning (online guide)
We introduce the concept of disaster/emergency planning, provide a framework for implementation and detail sources and models useful to those responsible for disaster/emergency planning and risk mitigation.
