Part of the Charles Ramsden Collection of Signed Bindings. In a contemporary gold-tooled calf binding signed by Courteval. Macchi states; first half of century Paris, bound by Courteval, unusual central picture. One of the greatest binders of his day; he worked from about 1796-1836f. É. Thoinan (Biographie, p. 234) refers to his gaufrages and to his marbled calf. His best bindings made before 1815, show much delicate work. His first address was Carmes 1 and later (1809) at n. 5, to which he often altered his label in ink (C. Ramsden, French bookbinders, p. 59). Different kinds of his work kept at the Wittockiana Library, Brussels, show the variery of his work (Bibliotheca Wittockiana, Bruxelles, Relieurs et reliures décorées, 2000, n. 4, 36, 43, 69, 71, 111, 119, 120, 158, 159, 160). Specimens of his work are illustrated in the Schiff collection (S. de Ricci, French signed bindings, II, 189-200), Descamps-Scrive (Bibliothèque, I, 22), Gumuchian (Gumuchian Libraire, Paris, Catalogue XII, p. 59) and Sale catalogue, Édouard Rahir (VI, 2018). |
