The central panels containing the text and ornamental capitals are in gold, in red and in blue. The panels are surrounded by plant decoration in gold, red, blue and black. Printed on the title page verso: "/Illuminated/ by/ Owen Jones/" The last leaf has the monogram "ONJ" [i.e. Owen Jones.] Text sewn on three sawn-in cords. Gilt edges. Bevelled boards. The edges and turn-ins are blocked in gold. White endpapers and pastedowns. Brown calf over boards. The bevels are blocked with hatch in blind and in relief hatch. The inside border has a pattern of large holly leaves and berries, blocked in deep relief. The "background" to these is rib horizontal-grain. On the lower cover, the central panel is formed by two "fillets", which interlock on the corners and on the sides, with diamond straps at the head and at the tail. Inside, a pattern of trefoils and stems is blocked in relief. At the centre the signature "ONJ" is blocked in relief as a monogram. The "background" is bead-grain effect. On the upper cover, the same two fillets form the central panel. Inside, the title: "/ Gray's/ Elegy" is blocked in relief in gothic letters, surrounded by leaves and stems in relief. The "background" is also bead-grain. The spine is blocked in blind and in relief. From the head to the tail, a pattern of trefoils is blocked. The trefoils are attached to a branch which runs down the centre of the spine. Text copyright, Edmund M.B. King.
