Notes Pre-1600. Gold-tooled brown leather with the portrait, an inscription and the arms of Albert III, Duke of Bavaria, dated 1571; vols 1 and 4 rebacked. Provenance Albrecht (b. 1528, d. 1579), Duke of Bavaria: his portrait, the inscription 'Albertus Dei gratia Comes Palatinus ac utriusque Bavariae Dux'; 'Anno Domini MDLXXI', and his arms (upper and lower cover). ? Thomas Howard (b. 1585, d. 1646), 2nd earl of Arundel, 4th earl of Surrey, and 1st earl of Norfolk, art collector and politician. Henry Howard (b. 1628, d. 1684), 6th duke of Norfolk, presented to the Royal Society in 1667.
