Notes Contemporary binding of sheep-skin dyed red (over oak boards), stamped in small square panels with fleurs-de-lys and heraldic beasts and birds within a narrow border of hippocamps with floriated tails. On the lower cover is nailed a vellum label inscribed "De viciis et virtutibus." Note of ownership on f. iv (14th cent.) "Iste liber debet reverti ad conventum sancti Martini Tornacensis," the Benedictine abbey of St. Martin's, Tournai. Phillipps MS. 2144 (sale-cat. 1896, lot 1065). Afterwards belonged to Henry White (sale-cat. 1902, lot 1964). Dunn sale-cat. 1914,lot 1587. Another romanesque binding is Add Ms 43100.

Notes Traces of clasps. Contemporary French binding of wooden boards, covered with brown leather; each cover is divided by intersecting fillets into a panel and two frames, the former sub-divided by five narrow vertical bands stamped with small stamps, the centre series bearing a rose, the two outer a fleur-de-lys, and the two others the arms of France, while the outer and inner frames are stamped with stamps bearing respectively two birds and a Gallic cock with a star above. On f. i is a contemporary signature "Nico-laus de Marchis de pago cleri." Belonged, like Burney MSS. 300, 301, and Add. MS. 38689, to the Celestines [Priory of St. Antoine, afterw. Abbey of St. Martin-aux-Jumeaux] of Amiens ("Aux Celes- tins D'Amiens," 17th cent., f. 1).

Notes The binding of this Qur’an was probably made during the Marinid dynasty (which ruled the Berber tribe in the thirteenth-century). The Marinids lived in present day Morocco and Spain. 280 x 220 (250 with flap extended) x 288 mm. According to Colin Baker, the binding is the earliest known example of gold tooling on a leather binding.

Notes The covers are divided into compartments by bands adorned with eight-lobed rosettes. The centre device on the front is a lozenge-shaped panel of reticulated cable work enclosing a round stamp of a winged bull, on the back an eight-lobed rose, each lobe being an impression of a dragon. Other stamps disposed in rows include two cockatrices addorsed, their tails entrailed in a fleur-de-lys, a warrior on horse- back, a warrior kneeling, a bird feeding across a curved bough, a bird passing beneath two straight boughs, a hound(?) feeding, leaves, etc. (Cf. Catalogue of Bookbindings in the National Art Library, S. Kensington, 1894, English Rubbings, nos. 6, 9, where some of these stamps reappear.) 11 X 7 in. Another romanesque binding is Add Ms 43100.
