Each bindings record comprises a sequence of descriptive elements
Note that items marked with a * are in the authority lists for descriptions
The British Library or National Library of the Netherlands shelfmark for an
item, excluding punctuation (ie full stops, brackets).
The country in which the item was bound.
The century in which the item was bound.
* Cover material
The material used for the cover.
The main colour or colours of the binding.
* Decorative technique
How the covers were decorated, eg tooled, painted etc.
Indicative of artistic movement, eg Cubist; individual motifs, eg urn; and
overall design, eg centre and cornerpiece.
Descriptive of decoration used on the edges of the leaves, eg marbled,
gauffered (ie tooled).
The name of the binder. Omit apostrophes, eg Queens Binder A, not Queens'
Binder A, and foreign accents. Where the binder is identified by initials, the
name is filed under the second initial, eg the binder R L is filed under L.
* Ownership mark
Marks indicating who owned the book.
The name of the author(s) or attributed author(s) of the work. Omit foreign
The title of the work(s). Omit foreign accents.
Place of publication
The place of publication of the work - not necessarily in the country of the
binding. This normally takes the English form, eg Lyons, (France), not Lugduni.
Date of publication
The date of publication of the work - not necessarily the date of the binding.
Miscellaneous notes about the book or its binding, only searchable through
Keyword search or Quick search.
Details of bosses, clasps, ties, wooden boards, binder's signature etc. Use
Details of items with similar bindings.
References to other sources for further details about this binding. A full list
of sources is given in the bibliography.
