NotesGladstone, under strong pressure from religious opinion, decided that the cause of home rule must take precedence over Parnell's leadership of the Home Rule Party, but the muddled process by which this information failed to be privately conveyed to the Home Rule Party meeting on 25 November 1890 led to a public demand by Gladstone for Parnell's resignation; the Home Rule Party then split, the majority following Gladstone's lead, the minority Parnell.
