This copy of the Four Gospels in Serbian Church Slavonic is one of the finest books produced within the empire of Stefan Uroš IV Dušan (1331-55). Its illumination, including this headpiece, or ornamental panel, at the beginning of Luke, derives from Byzantine models. The large decorated number in red in the margin gives the pericope number, which identifies the time during the liturgical year at which the reading would occur.
