This full-page miniature of David with a harp, surrounded by his musicians and dancers, is found in the Vespasian Psalter, produced in south-east England in the second quarter of the 8th century. David is framed by two scribes who write the Psalms on a scroll and a wax tablet as the king composes them. Although the image now faces the text for Psalm 26, it has been suggested that it originally stood at the beginning of the manuscript, thus acting like an introductory author portrait for the text. The initial D on the facing page, which depicts the friendship of David and Jonathan, is thought to be the earliest appearance in western art.
