Henry Yates Thompson’s illuminated manuscripts
The British Library’s Yates Thompson Manuscripts
The manuscripts which today comprise the Yates Thompson collection in the British Library can be divided into two groups.
The first are the six Yates Thompson manuscripts acquired by the British Museum before 1941. Four of these were purchased by the British Museum from Thompson before his death in 1928 (Yates Thompson 11, 26, 28, and 52); one was given by Henry Yates Thompson (the St Omer Psalter, Yates Thompson 14) in 1918; and the other was given by Mrs Yates Thompson in memory of her husband in 1929 (Yates Thompson 9). After Mrs Yates Thompson’s bequest of the remaining forty-six manuscripts to the British Museum in 1941, the other six manuscripts, which had been assigned manuscript numbers in the Additional sequence as they were acquired, were subsequently given the Yates Thompson numbers by which they are now known.
All of the British Library’s Yates Thompson manuscripts are described and illustrated on the Catalogue of Illuminated Manuscripts website.
