Decorated foliate heapieces in red, often with a yellow wash, one extending into the margin (f. 1), one with an animal head (f. 213). Large decorated initials, in red and yellow, or red, black, and yellow, some zoomorphic or anthropomorphic (birds or hands) (ff. 23v, 24v, 29v, 189). Animals in the margins (fish, ff. 168v, 169v; snake, 184v). Large and small red initials, some with penwork decoration and yellow highlights. Some text highlighted in yellow. |

ff. 172-173 are replacements in a later hand. ? Thomas Howard (b. 1585, d. 1646), 2nd earl of Arundel, 4th earl of Surrey, and 1st earl of Norfolk, art collector and politician. Henry Howard (b. 1628, d. 1684), 6th duke of Norfolk, presented to the Royal Society in 1667. The Royal Society, London (its ink stamp: 'Soc. Reg. Lond. / ex dono HENR. HOWARD / Norfolciensis', f. 2). Purchased by the British Museum from the Royal Society of London together with 549 other Arundel manuscripts in 1831. |
