Title, encircled by a wreath, held by two putti, in colours and gold, not by the main artist (f. 1v). Three sided border with white vine, putti, birds, butterflies, rabbits and portrait bust miniatures, in colours and gold, at the beginning of the text (f. 2). Partial borders with white vine, in colours and gold (ff. 192, 218v). Large white vine initials, in colours and gold (ff. 2, 5, 15, 31v, 41v, 58, 73, 87, 102, 114, 128, 139, 146, 167v, 192, 193, 218v (x2), 241v, 258v). Small initials in plain red or blue. |

Spaces for arms left blank (ff. 1v, 2). Perhaps a direct copy of Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Urb. Lat. 1328, which belonged to Poggio Bracciolini (b. 1380, d. 1459), Italian humanist and historian. The marginal Latin translation for the Greek copied by the scribe of the Budapest Theophrastus (see de la Mare 1985). The Greek added by Skutariotes: see Repertorium 1981. ? Thomas Howard (b. 1585, d. 1646), 2nd earl of Arundel, 4th earl of Surrey, and 1st earl of Norfolk, art collector and politician. Henry Howard (b. 1628, d. 1684), 6th duke of Norfolk, presented to the Royal Society in 1667. The Royal Society, London (its ink stamp: 'Soc. Reg. Lond / ex dono HENR. HOWARD / Norfolciensis.', f. 2v). Purchased by the British Museum from the Royal Society of London together with 549 other Arundel manuscripts in 1831. |
