Decoration 1 large white vine initial developing a partial border, in colours and gold (f. 1). 1 smaller initial in gold on a red and green ground (f. 1). Small initials in plain red or blue, 1 with brown pen-flourishing (f. 82v).
Dimensions in mm 330 x 230 (200 x 140)
Official foliation ff. 104 (+ 1 blank ruled leaf after f. 103; + 1 modern paper flyleaf at the beginning, and 1 old and 1 modern paper flyleaves at the end)
Form Paper codex; ff. 1 and 10 are a parchment bifolium.
Binding BM/BL in-house. Rebound in 1962.
Provenance Hans Pirckheimer (b. 1417, d. 1492), Nuremberg patrician, jurist, diplomat, and humanist: annotated in his hand (see Holzberg 1981, p. 39).
Johann Pirckheimer (b. 1440, d. 1501), son of Hans Pirckheimer, Nuremberg patrician, jurist, diplomat, and humanist: inscribed 'Johannis pirckheymer utriusque iuris doctoris et amicorum' (f. 104v).
? Thomas Howard (b. 1585, d. 1646), 2nd earl of Arundel, 4th earl of Surrey, and 1st earl of Norfolk, art collector and politician.
Henry Howard (b. 1628, d. 1684), 6th duke of Norfolk, presented to the Royal Society in 1667.
The Royal Society, London (its ink stamp: 'Soc. Reg. Lond / ex dono HENR. HOWARD / Norfolciensis.', f. 1).
Purchased by the British Museum from the Royal Society together with 549 other Arundel manuscripts in 1831.
Notes Marginal sketch of an angel, added by Hans or Johann Pirckheimer? (f. 102v).
