14 large and smaller historiated initials, the first accompanied by a full historiated border with heraldic decoration and all'antica features, including gemstones, putti, and candelabrae, the others accompanied by partial foliate borders, in colours and gold (ff. 15, 97, 147, 175, 191,191v, 207, 210, 213v, 216v, 219v, 224, 231, 235v). 9 large decorated initials, with foliate extensions into the margins, in colours and gold (ff. 39v, 45, 50v, 55v, 61, 70, 75v, 81, 202v). Small initials in plain gold or blue. |

Abbate Canonici of Venice: his sale, 25 June 1836, lot 141. Walter Sneyd: his sale, December 1903, lot 556; bought by Yates Thompson. Henry Yates Thompson (b. 1838, d. 1928), collector of illuminated manuscripts and newspaper proprietor: with his book-plate inscribed '[MS] lxxviii / sae.e.e [i.e. £640.0.0] / [bought from] Sneyd Sale / Sotheby's / Dec / 1903' (inside upper cover). Bequeathed to the British Museum in 1941 by Mrs Henry Yates Thompson. |
