Artists Rouse and Rouse 2000 attribute the manuscript to the Fauvel Master (fl. c. 1314 to c. 1340).
Decoration 1 two-column miniature, with a large decorated foliate initial and a full foliate border with bird and animals, in colours and gold (f. 1). 22 single column miniatures, accompanied by small decorated foliate initials with foliate extensions into the margins, in colours and gold (ff. 2 (x2), 2v (x2), 3, 3v (x2), 4, 4v, 5v, 7, 11v, 13, 13v, 15, 27v, 28v, 29, 30v [with a large initial], 53, 88, 110). Small initials in gold on red and blue grounds.

Provenance Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville (b. 1776, d. 1839), 1st duke of Buckingham and Chandos, of Stowe House, near Buckingham: inscribed with the press-mark 'Press 2 no. 99' (f. 1), corresponding to his catalogue (O'Conor 1818-1819).
Richard Plantagenet Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville (b. 1797, d. 1861), 2nd duke of Buckingham and Chandos; sold in 1849 to Lord Ashburnham.
Bertram Ashburnham (b. 1797, d. 1878), 4th earl of Ashburnham, of Ashburnham Place, Sussex.
Bertram Ashburnham (b. 1840, d. 1913), 5th earl of Ashburnham: purchased by the British Museum from him together with 1084 other Stowe manuscripts in 1883.

The text of the Roman de la rose was begun around 1220, possibly by Guillaume de Lorris and continued by Jean de Meun between 1269-1278. It is around 20,000 octosyllabic lines of French verse narrating the dream of a young lover, in which the long quest he has undertaken ends when he breaches the castle of Jealousy and obtains the rose. The earlier text is around 4,000 lines, and is lyrical and courtly, while the later addition is more didactic, scholarly, and pessimistic.
