Inscribed 'finis. 1482' (f. 111); and acquired ('comparavit') in 1485: inscribed ' with the date as cited below (f. 160v). Raphael de Marcatellis (b. 1437, d. 1508), abbot of St Bavon's, Ghent: with his arms (ff. 3, 129), and his unexplained monogram: 'L.Y.S.' (f. 91v); inscribed 'Hoc volumen comparavit Raphael de Marcatellis, Dei gratia episcopus Rosensis [Rhosus, Cicilia], abbas Sancti Bavonis iuxta Gandavum [Ghent], et quad potuit correxit anno Domini 1485' (f. 160v). ? Thomas Howard (b. 1585, d. 1646), 2nd earl of Arundel, 4th earl of Surrey, and 1st earl of Norfolk, art collector and politician. Henry Howard (b. 1628, d. 1684), 6th duke of Norfolk, presented to the Royal Society in 1667. The Royal Society, London (its ink stamp: 'Soc. Reg. Lond / ex dono HENR. HOWARD / Norfolciensis.', f. 1; its book-plate with the pencil inscription: ‘XV.3.6’, inside upper cover). Purchased by the British Museum from the Royal Society together with 549 other Arundel manuscripts in 1831. |
