Provenance The Benedictine abbey of Christ Church, Canterbury: inscribed 'Biblioteca ecclesie Christi', 13th century (vol. II, Royal 1 D VIII, f. 193); probably to be identified with a 'Biblia bipartita in infirmaria in duobus voluminibus' in Tituli librorum de libraria ecclesiae Christi compiled under Henry of Estria (1284-1331), Cotton Galba E IV (see James, The Ancient Libraries of Canterbury and Dover (Cambridge, University Press, 1903) no 321, p. 51); extensively corrected in the 11th-12th centuries by scribes writing a Christ Church script, probably in the same hand as in Arundel MS 155, which has a Christ Church origin and provenance (see Dumville (1991), p. 47).
Added Obadiah 19-21, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, Baruch, Esdras III and IV in a 16th-century imitation of Caroline Minuscule (ff. 185-208).
Robert Lenton: inscribed with his name on a slip of paper inserted between ff. 34 and 35, 16th century (f. 34*).
Henry Fitzalan, 12th earl of Arundel (b. 1512, d. 1580), magnate: inscribed with his name, 'Arundel' (f. 2).
John Lumley, 1st baron Lumley (b. c. 1533, d. 1609), collector and conspirator: inscribed with his name (f. 2); listed in the 1609 catalogue of his collection, no. 134 (see The Lumley Library, 1956); passed to Henry, prince of Wales.
Henry Frederick, prince of Wales (b. 1594, d. 1612), eldest child of James I: his collection became part of the Royal Library: perhaps to be identified with 'Biblia Latina usque ad cap. 16 Esaiae' in the 1698 catalogue of the library of St James's Palace (see Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliae et Hiberniae (Oxford: Sheldonian, '1697'), no . 7723).
Presented to the British Museum by George II in 1757 as part of the Old Royal Library.
Notes The only known surviving Anglo-Saxon copy of the complete Bible: see Cahn (1982), p. 82.
Includes the epistle of Jerome to Paulinus, imperfect (starts with: 'Quid igitur. Damnamus veteres'), Octateuch, Kings, Major Prophets, and Minor Prophets.
The second volume is Royal 1 E VIII.
The text corrected or emended by a Christ Church scribe; other manuscripts attributed to him are: Cambridge, Trinity College, MSS B.1.17 and B.3.9 (see Marsden (1994) and Webber (1995)). Parts of the Bible are completed in later hands on added quires: Genesis 1-29 (ff. 15th century, see part 3) and Obadiah 19-21, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, Baruch and Esdras III and IV (ff. 185-208, 16th century).
