Binding Post-1600. 19th-century red morocco with gold and other tooling.
Provenance Bernard Alexander Christian Quaritch (b. 1819, d.1899), bookseller and publisher: probably Quaritch's catalogue 279, August 1871, no. 22; bought by Ruskin.
John Ruskin (b. 1819, d. 1900), art critic and social critic: his extensive notes on most folios, including the inscription 'Brantwood. 2nd Aug. 1873' (f. 80) and 'Finished. 11th May . 1875 . . and reviewed for list of chapters , 9th June 1875' (f. 155v); his bookplate 'Ex Libris John Ruskin Brantwood' (f. i); inscription 'Names of the Companions accepted, forming St George's Company, March 1876' (f. 147); his sale, Sotheby's, 24 July 1930, lot 23, bought by the British Museum, using the Farnborough Fund (3,000 bequeathed in 1838 by Charles Long, Baron Farnborough (b. 1761, d. 1838), a cousin of Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (b. 1756, d. 1829), founder of the collection.
