Binding Original binding of red tooled leather over wooden boards with metal bosses and clasps. A Limoges enamel miniature of the Virgin has been inserted in the upper binding at a later date.
Provenance Clifton Wintringham Loscombe of Clifton (b.1784 , d.1853), collector and bibliophile: in his sale, Sotheby's 19 June, 1854, lot 1138; bought by the British Museum.

The layout and subjects of the miniatures are closely related to that of three Flemish manuscripts, all believed to have been copied from the same English exemplar, They are: British Library, Additional 38121, Manchester, John Rylands Library MS Lat. 19 and London, Welcome Institute, MS 49 (formerly in the Sneyd collection). A related copy is an early block-book of the Apocalypse, made in the Netherlands in the 15th century, derived from the same or a similar exemplar (see James, Apocalypse in Art (1927), pp. 47-48).
