Artists Those miniatures on ff. 137v-144v and 162v-168 attributed to the Cité des Dames Master; those on ff. 10v-11 to the workshop of the Virgil Master; those on ff. 226v-239v to the Orosius Master; the reproduced miniature on f. 6 to a Netherlandish illuminator working in Paris, who executed a large part of the miniatures; at least two other hands working in related styles.
Decoration Partial bar borders and initials with ivy leaves in gold, red and blue (ff. 4v, 20v, 105, 122, 137v, 157v, 177, 193, 226v, 230, 232, 239v, 241, 245v). Numerous miniatures, usually with figures in semi-grisaille with pale blue sky and green earth (2 in full colour on a diaper ground of gold and blue or gold and red, ff. 10v, 11v). Large and small gold initials on blue and red grounds, some with foliate decoration. Running book roman numbers in gold, blue, or red with penwork decoration. Geometric line fillers in gold, red, and blue.

Form Parchment codex
Binding Post-1600. French 18th century elaborate gold-tooled red morocco, the corners with a gold urn motif; blue silk doublures; gilt leaves.
Provenance Extensive 16th century inscriptions, erased, and added verses in humanistic cursive script, including the Latin distichs on Petrarch's Trionfi, in several hands (ff. 2, 222v-224v, 248v).
R. Garnier (b. c.1545, d. c.1590), poet of Le Mans (inscription: 'Ce livre a esté donné a monsieur des Portes Abbé de Thiron en la ville du Mans le treziesme Jour de Juin mil cinq cens quatre vingts et cinq, par R. Garnier lieutenant criminel aud[it] lieu, son affectionné serviteur [signed] 'R Garnier', f. 1).
