Datable to c. 1244: the original scribe includes events down to 1243 (f. 133v); probably written at the Cistercian abbey of St Mary, Dore: mention of the abbey as 'hec domus' and 'ista domus' (f. 134); its foundation mentioned in the hand of the original scribe (f. 132); mentioned in an obliterated 16th-century note (f. 116v) (see Watson). John Blaxton, 1578: inscription 'Sum gulielmi Wooddi Bosburiensis [Bosbury, Herefordshire, about 20 miles from Dore] 1578/ Olim Johnnis Blaxtoni')(f. 3). William Wood, 1578: above-cited inscription. Notes of contents in a late 16th-century hand, (ff. 1v-3). The name of an 18th-century owner(? John Baker) has been deleted (f. 2). Thomas Rodd the younger (b. 1796, d. 1849), London bookseller: his 1838 catalogue, No. 438*; bought by Phillipps. Sir Thomas Phillipps (b. 1792, d. 1872), baronet, collector of books and manuscripts: his comments on the manuscript in pencil (ff. iii-iv); his manuscript number in pen 'Phillipps MS 12200' (f. ii). Sir (Alfred) Chester Beatty (b. 1875, d. 1968), mining engineer and art collector: his Western manuscript number 'MS. W. 59' (f. i); foliated for him by Eric Millar; his sale at Sotheby's, 9 May 1933, lot. 49: sold to Quaritch for £270. Bought by the British Museum, using the Bridgewater fund (£12,000 bequeathed in 1829 by Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (b. 1756, d. 1829). |
