If you are unable to view our online training videos, to help you use Explore the British Library, you may find these text versions useful. Alternatively, try our Adobe PDF files.

Some of the information is intended just for British Library Reader Pass holders (or registered document supply customers).

Comments are welcome and will be used to improve the help supplied.

Upgrade reader account

- You need to upgrade your reader account to a British Library Online Account.

- Click on Log in (in the top right-hand corner of the screen).

- Click on Upgrade.

- Enter your current number in the Reader ID box.

- Enter your Pass expiry date using the three drop-down menus.

- Select the day.

- E.g., select 23.

- Select the month.

- E.g., select Sep.

- Then select the year.

- E.g., select 2016.

- Click on Continue.

- If you already have one of the accounts listed below then select Yes. If you have registered for any of the following British Library services, you will already have a British Library Online Account: MBS Portal; Box Office; BLDSS, BLDSS; Social Welfare Portal.

- You are also advised to view the video demonstrating how you merge your reader account with an existing online account.

- Select No to upgrade your reader account.

- Click on Continue.

- The system will display 'Personal details' information from your existing reader account.

- Your email address should also be displayed. Check that it is correct.

- If necessary, enter and confirm your email address.

- Finally, enter your chosen username, password and secret question details.

- Please note the system’s requirements for a valid username. The username must: (1) Be between 6 and 256 characters in length. (2) Not include spaces. (3) Not be your Reader Number.

- Please note that your username cannot be changed after upgrading your account.

- The password must be between 8 and 20 characters in length.

- It must also comply with the following format: (1) Contain at least one uppercase character from A to Z. (2) Contain at least one lowercase character from a to z. (3) Contain at least one numeric character from 0 to 9.

- Confirm the password by re-typing it.

- Then select your preferred 'Secret question'.

- E.g., Name of Pet.

- Enter the answer.

- Click the box to accept the Terms & Conditions.

- Please note that once you click on Register then your username cannot be changed.

- Click on Register.

- You have now upgraded your account.

- Click on Finish to return to the Login page.

- Login using your new username and password.

Merge accounts

- If you need to merge your reader account with your British Library Online Account, please follow these steps.

- Click on Log in (in the top right-hand corner of the screen).

- Click on Upgrade.

- Enter your current number in the Reader ID box.

- Enter your Pass expiry date using the three drop-down menus.

- Select the day.

- E.g., select 23.

- Select the month.

- E.g., select Sep.

- Then select the year.

- E.g., select 2016.

- Click on Continue.

- If you already have one of the accounts listed below then select Yes. If you have registered for any of the following British Library services, you will already have a British Library Online Account: MBS Portal; Box Office; BLDSS, BLDSS; Social Welfare Portal.

- Select No if you do not already have one of the above accounts. You are also advised to view the video demonstrating how to upgrade your existing reader account.

- Click on Yes, I have registered for one of these services already.

- Enter your British Library Online Account username.

- Enter your British Library Online Account password.

- Click on Continue.

- You have now merged your accounts.

- Click on Finish to return to the Login page.

- Login using your account username and password.

Change password

- Click on Log in.

- Click on Edit account preferences.

- Enter your British Library Online Account username in the Username box.

- Then enter your current password.

- Click on Login.

- The My Settings tab contains the user's details.

- The current password will be displayed as XXXXXXXXXX for security reasons.

- Click on the blue Change link to the right of Password.

- The password must comply with this format: (A) Be between 8 and 20 characters in length. (B) Contain at least one uppercase character from A to Z. (C) Contain at least one lowercase character from a to z. (D) Contain at least one numeric character from 0 to 9.

- Click on the blue Password format if you are still unsure.

- Enter your new password.

- Then enter the password again.

- Click on Save.

- You have now successfully changed your password.

- Click on Done.

- Click on Logout.

- Close and relaunch the browser to clear the previous password. Then login in the usual way.
