This manuscript shows an example of Franz Schubert’s song composition. His setting of verses by Franz von Schober dates from about 1817. He later revised the song, in the version shown here, for publication in 1827. The simple melody, half-stated in the opening bars of the accompaniment, goes to the heart of the poem.
Before his death at the age of 31, Schubert wrote over 600 songs. The years between 1814 and 1816 were a particularly productive and creative period for the composer who wrote symphonies, masses, chamber music and nearly 250 songs in those two years alone.
Schubert (1797 - 1828) was a teacher at his father’s school, but he eventually gave up teaching to concentrate on his musical composition.
