This picture was taken at the Italian Front in March 1917. It is one of numerous testimonies of the widespread religious rituals practiced by troops in World War One. The blessing of the flag just before advancing to the front line shows the importance of the Church in the mobilisation of European societies during war.

Cette photographie prise sur le front italien témoigne de l’importance de la religion dans la mobilisation culturelle des sociétés européennes. Elle se traduit à la fois par la présence massive de prêtres dans les unités combattantes et par le grand nombre d’objets à caractère religieux dont s’entourèrent les soldats de la Grande Guerre (livres de prières, images saintes, ex-voto).
