The poet-soldier Gabriele D’Annunzio (1863-1938) wrote to Luigi Cardorna (1850-1928), Commander-in-Chief of the Italian army on 18 September 1917. The letter is written on headed paper of the air squadron Della Comina, a place near Pordenone, in Friuli. The Latin motto of the squadron is cominus et eminus ferit, it will wound from near and far.

Gabriele D’Annunzio (1863-1938), il “poeta-soldato” della Prima Guerra Mondiale scrisse a Luigi Cadorna (1850-1928), comandante in capo dell'esercito italiano il 18 settembre 1917. La lettera è scritta su carta intestata della Air Squadron 'della Comina' (un posto vicino a Pordenone, in Friuli). Il motto latino dello squadrone è: Cominus et eminus Ferit: 'Sarà ferire da vicino e lontano'.

Excellency, yesterday I came to the army’s general headquarters for some minutes, but, I couldn’t disturb you, as I knew you were really busy. I took with me in Udine the noble French sculptor Maurice Favre, whose name couldn’t be unknown to Your Excellency, because he is reliable for the Republic Government by the headquarter.

Eccellenza, ieri venni per qualche minuto al Comando supremo, ma, sapendola molto occupata, non osai disturbarla. Avevo condotto meco a Udine il nobile scultore francese Maurice Favre, il cui nome non dev’essere ignoto all’Eccellenza Vostra, poiché egli è accreditato presso il Quartier Generale dal Governo della Repubblica.
