The Colonial Copyright Collection of Canadian photographs

This collection covers the period 1895-1924, meaning it contains many photographs relating to the conflicts Canada was involved in during this time. The photographs were received by the British Museum Library (now part of the British Library) as part of the copyright process for Canadian intellectual property that existed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In total over 4,000 photographs were received and the content of the collection is wide ranging as well as surprising. While photographs relating to the Second South African War (1899-1902) are relatively few there is a large amount of material directly and indirectly related to the First World War (1914-1918). Many of these photographs are of troops and service personnel as they are about to leave for Europe, but there are also images of Canada's home front efforts, the effects of the war on Canadian citizens and examples of Canadian's humorous approach to some aspects of the conflict.
