This photograph shows soldiers in a trench on Podgora Hill, Gorizia, at the Italian Front wearing early rudimentary gas masks. One of the bloodiest assaults on the Italian Front took place here. The battle was fought by the Italian army corps of Carabinieri on 19 July 1915. The picture belongs to the collections of the photographic department of the Supreme Command of the Royal Italian Army, from an album entitled The War, where the more ‘glorious’ memories of the war were illustrated.
