This poster commemorates killed soldiers from Magrè, a small town in Schio, Vicenza, in Italy. It is an example of publications produced all over Italy in ‘eternal memory’ of more than 650,000 war dead.
Families would have sent photographs of their loved ones to newspapers, or to printers, to allow them to be copied and reproduced. This poster includes a combination of 32 portraits of those who died in the war. Note that there is a mixture of men dressed in uniform and in ‘ordinary’ clothes. Items like these would allow family members to grieve personally, but also for villages to mourn together.
