'The Trial-for-Murder Mania' from Punch's Almanack

Periodical/Illustration/Image

Description

English

This satirical cartoon from the 1850 edition of Punch’s Almanack, a yearly offshoot publication by the magazine Punch, addresses the British public’s appetite for all things crime-related. In the 19th century vast crowds gathered to watch criminals at trials and public executions, and there was a booming market for books and other printed materials about crime. The cartoon contains details such as sign reading ‘Opera glasses within’ and a booth to buy tickets, creating a disturbing, grim link between the horror of murder, popular entertainment and commercialism.
