Photograph of Woman in the Russian cavalry (savage division)

Description

This rare photograph was taken in the eastern part of the Ottoman Empire. It shows a female member of the Russian savage division, part of the Russian imperial guard created in 1828 and composed of volunteers from the Caucasian minorities such as Ossets, Tchetchens and Georgians. Historical accounts of women’s roles during war often focus on their participation as civilians in war industries or transportation networks. This document depicts a far more complex situation, which is rarely included in historical accounts.
