1880s

The trade was keen to promote both new techniques and good designs. The journal The Bookbinder published examples of cloth bindings to maintain standards and encourage experimentation. An article in the volume for 1889, noting the 'great improvements' of recent years, is illustrated with a design submitted by the London binding firm George Simpson & Co. for a book published by Frederick Warne and Co. The design is bold and illustrative of the story, as is characteristic of publishers' bindings.
