Felix Summerly
was the pseudonym of Sir Henry Cole (1808-82), the first director
of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Between 1843 and 1847 he published
the 'Home Treasury', a series of traditional nursery stories designed
to appeal to the 'fancy, imagination, sympathies and affections'
of a child's mind. Carefully printed by Charles Whittingham at the
Chiswick Press, the most distinguished printing house of the nineteenth
century, these elegant little volumes sold for two shillings and
sixpence, or one shilling uncoloured.
