This is the
first of five English translations of Hans Andersen's tales to be
published in 1846, although one was dated 1847. It was highly-praised
by the critics, and delighted even the demanding author, although
neither he nor his translator could have been pleased by the misspelling
of his name on the titlepage. The anonymous frontispiece is a complex
piece of printing: the line is produced from a metal plate, then
over-printed with two or three lithographic tints, and heightened
with hand-colouring.
