Children of the New Forest
  Children’s books

Captain Marryat (1792-1848) spent an adventurous youth at sea during the Napoleonic Wars before returning home to write naval adventures for adults and children, and the first historical books for children. The Children of the New Forest, his last completed work, is set during the English Civil War, and tells the story of the orphaned children of a colonel in the King's army, who are secretly cared for by an old servant until they are able to regain their inheritance at the Restoration. The frontispiece showing the burning of Arnwood, the children's family home, is by Frank Marryat, the author's son.
