Charles Kingsley
(1819-75) was an Anglican clergyman, Fellow of the Geological Society,
and Regius Professor of History at Cambridge, where he was a favourite
tutor of the Prince of Wales. The Water-babies brings together
his many theological, scientific and social concerns. Despite its
heavily moral and allegorical overtones, the book remains a landmark
in the history of Victorian children's literature. The frontispiece
of Mrs. Doasyouwouldbedoneby is by J. Noel Paton, best known for
his fairy pictures; the unsigned chapter initials within the text
are by Robert Dudley.
