This dramatic wood engraving by Joseph Swain was made from a 6H pencil cartoon drawn directly on the wood block by Sir John Tenniel. The original pencil line has been thickened and reinterpreted for the wood, and the white areas cut away, to render Tenniel's fine design in black printer's ink without any loss of detail.
