Walter Crane's toy books, with their strong outlines, flat tints and broad areas of colour, required a relatively small number of wood blocks, and consequently only a few workings to print in full colour. On closer inspection, it may be seen that an impression of extra colours has been achieved by the careful over-printing of lines and areas of different colours.
