Owen Jones (1809-74) set up
his own lithographic press to print the colour plates in this scholarly record of
the decorations of the Alhambra Palace. His chromolithographs, produced by
successive printings of flat areas of different colours including gold, were among
the earliest examples of full colour lithography in England. With 104 plates,
including steel and copper engravings, it was a slow and expensive book to
produce.
