Shafts,
1892-1900
Shafts
was an idealistic, if slightly esoteric, radical and feminist paper.
The cover design, showing a female figure aiming arrows of wisdom
and justice, symbolises its view of the New Woman. The contents,
by Charlotte Stopes, Dora Montefiore, Matilda Sharpe among others,
were more practical: a typical issue included reviews, news of the
Independent Labour Party, articles on sport, a discussion of women's
franchise, and a serial.
