Mrs. Gaskell's only historical novel, set during the Napoleonic Wars, was published in three volumes in February 1863. This cheap one-volume edition followed unusually quickly, in time for the Christmas market. It included four fine plates designed by George du Maurier, who went on to produce illustrations for a series of her novels which is generally considered amongst his best work. |
