Early bloods were partly derived from popular chapbooks and broadsides. Usually they bear a rather crude illustration on one third to one half of the first page of each weekly number to attract the reader. Occasionally there was a second illustration inside. Printing was of poor quality, and the text not necessarily well adapted to the eight-page instalments. |
