The visual and
textual narratives in this book are the work of many notable photographers,
including Stephen Thompson, Shepherd and Muybridge. The printing
process was invented by the editor of the book, Walter Woodbury,
who in 1865 patented the Woodburytype, a permanent photo-mechanical
process by which a photographic negative was used as the basis for
producing a relief image on lead and coated with ink. This process
provided publishers with permanent, attractive images which were
cheaper and more reliable than original photographs as a means of
pictorial illustration.
